Hands on Inputs distribution cum Demonstration Programme on Vermicomposting

The Hands-on Inputs Distribution cum Demonstration Programme on Vermicomposting, organized by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, on March 1st, 2024, provided participants with valuable knowledge and practical insights into the process of vermicomposting. Led by Dr. N Uttam Singh, Senior Scientist, and PI, the programme commenced with an introductory session highlighting the importance of vermicomposting in sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Balusamy Arumugam, Scientist from the Division of Soil Resource and Environment (DSRE), delivered a comprehensive lecture on the procedure and significance of vermicomposting. The lecture covered various aspects, including the selection of appropriate earthworm species, composting techniques, and the benefits of vermicompost in enhancing soil health and crop productivity.
Following the lecture, participants engaged in a field visit to observe vermicompost production in practice. This hands-on experience provided participants with practical insights into the setup and maintenance of vermicompost units, reinforcing the concepts discussed during the lecture session.
A total of 5 beneficiaries, selected purposively based on their keen interest in vermicomposting, actively participated in the programme. They actively engaged in discussions and sought clarification on various aspects of vermicomposting techniques, demonstrating their enthusiasm for adopting sustainable agricultural practices.
Additionally, inputs in the form of Vermi-bed were distributed to the participating farmers, enabling them to establish vermicompost units on their farms and initiate vermicomposting activities independently.
The Hands-on Inputs Distribution cum Demonstration Programme on Vermicomposting was successful in achieving its objectives by providing participants with valuable knowledge and practical experience in vermicomposting. By combining theoretical learning with hands-on field visits, the programme effectively disseminated information and resources to promote the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices among farmers.
The event facilitated meaningful interactions between experts and participants, fostering a deeper understanding of vermicomposting techniques and their potential benefits in improving soil health and crop productivity. The distribution of Vermi-bed inputs further empowered participants to implement vermicomposting practices on their farms, contributing to the promotion of sustainable agriculture in the region.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. N Uttam Singh (Senior Scientist and PI), Dr. Balusamy Arumugam (Scientist, DSRE), Lutmonhaki Dkhar (SRF), and Wanbiang Dkhar (Project Assistant). Their collective efforts ensured the smooth conduct of the programme and the effective dissemination of scientific knowledge and resources to the participants.
